Why use biomimicry when you can use the actual biological products?

Researchers at Tokyo University are turning food scraps into concrete, with cabbage ranking #1 in tensile strength. Tensile strength indicates how much a material can bend before breaking.

The food cement is stronger than traditional cement, can be made waterproof with food-grade lacquer, and, yes, can be eaten.

Imagine the possibilities:

  • Temporary housing for disasters that can be eaten or composted.
  • A reduction in the concrete industry’s carbon emissions, which account for 8% of all emissions globally.
  • A reduction in the 1 billion tons of lost and wasted food annually.

It really isn’t too late.

And there is so much cause for optimism.
